Opening a window one inch does nothing. You need to open windows on opposite sides of the flat for 5 minutes twice a day. You need to swap the air out completely. Do this even in winter.

If you live on a busy road, get an air purifier with a HEPA filter. It captures the traffic particulates and the mould spores. It gives your lungs a break.

Heat the Wall, Not the Air

Mould grows on cold surfaces. Keep your heating on a lower, constant setting rather than blasting it for two hours and letting it freeze for ten. This keeps the walls warm enough to prevent condensation.

When DIY Isn’t Enough

Sometimes, opening a window won’t cut it. If the mould has eaten into the plaster, or if it keeps coming back despite your best efforts, the spores are likely deep in the substrate. That is where professional mould removal becomes necessary.

Red Flags That Need Professional Attention:

  • The “Earthy” Smell: You can’t see it, but you can smell damp compost. This usually means mould is behind wallpaper or under floorboards.
  • Black Spotted Silicone: If the sealant around your windows or bath is black, the mould has rooted. Bleach won’t fix this; it needs replacing.
  • Water Marks: Brown stains on ceilings usually indicate a slow leak that is feeding fungal growth from the inside out.

Common Questions About Pollution & Mould

Does the ULEZ help with indoor mould?

Indirectly. Lower NO2 levels outside mean your lungs are less inflamed, making you slightly more resilient to mould spores. But ULEZ doesn’t change the damp conditions inside your flat.

Can I just paint over the mould?

Please don’t. We see this all the time. Painting over mould is like putting a plaster on a splinter without taking the wood out. The mould will eat through the new paint in weeks, often coming back stronger.

Is “Anti-Mould” paint worth the money?

It helps, but only after the existing infection is 100% killed and removed. If you apply it on top of live spores, it’s useless.

I rent. Is this my landlord’s problem?

Legally, landlords must ensure homes are “fit for human habitation.” This includes freedom from serious damp. However, if the damp is caused solely by “lifestyle” (drying clothes indoors with no ventilation), it gets complicated. Document everything.
