Should I use anti-mould paint?

It can help, but it’s not a magic wand. Anti-mould paint contains fungicides that stop growth on the surface, but if the wall is soaking wet from condensation or the underlying mould wasn’t killed properly first, it will eventually bubble or peel off. It’s the final step, not the first.

Will internal wall insulation fix it?

It can, but it is risky. If you insulate the inside of a Victorian wall incorrectly, you can trap moisture between the brick and the insulation (interstitial condensation). This can rot your joists. Always consult a specialist before insulating solid walls.

Is black mould in the bedroom dangerous?

Yes. Stachybotrys chartarum (black mould) produces mycotoxins. Breathing this in nightly can lead to respiratory issues, asthma flare-ups, and skin rashes. In a bedroom, where you spend 8 hours a night, the exposure is high.

Why does mould come back after I bleach it?

Bleach is mostly water. It takes the colour out of the mould (bleaches it), so it looks clean, but the roots often survive in the porous plaster. The water in the bleach actually feeds these roots, often making the regrowth faster.
